“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
